Designed by Edward Turner, in 1958, the Daimler Dart was debuted at the 1959 New York Auto Show where it was savaged by the press for being the most unattractive car at the show. Adding insult to injury, when officials at Chrysler saw the car, they duly notified Daimler that Chrysler held the rights to the name “Dart”, to which Daimler had to hastily rename the car. From then forward, it became known as the Daimler SP250, SP250 being the internal project number for the car. In all, 2,654 examples of the V8-powered SP250 were built between 1959 and 1964.
