Greg Smith is a long time vintage racing enthusiast and runs a restoration shop that has traditionally specialized in European machinery. His taste is eclectic and his breadth of knowledge is impressive, spanning the gamut from Bugatti to OHC Maudslay with loads of experience in between. About 10 years ago Smith had an epiphany at first sight of an Indianapolis-style car at Laguna Seca. He said, “For much of my life fine American engineering was a secret well kept from me.” This would seem perplexing until one realizes that Smith was born and raised an Aussie in dear old Melbourne where he still lives and works.
Smith has not simply discovered American racing machinery, he is now a full-fledged fanatic. He explained, “I love the beautiful magnesium castings, the way everything seems to be designed, then built, not added on like a lot of other genres. And with all the decals, people are so proud of their products and their achievements, even if it’s just the guy balancing the wheels.” And Smith is now busy putting his Australian dollars where his mouth is.
