One of the main attractions for this weekend’s Mecum Chicago Auction at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center is a 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra Roadster that is being offered publically for the first time in nearly 30 years. The deep red machine is in the S/C configuration, with Halibrand wheels and chromed side pipes and roll bar, and is eligible for many vintage events worldwide. Owned by the same owner since 1986, its history is listed in the Shelby Registry — it was vintage raced between 1987 and 1995 — and it is both street legal and licensed.
Another car of note on offer is a four-speed 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback in original Grabber Blue paint, accompanied by its original and well-preserved build sheet as well as two original shipping invoices. Then there are several classic Pontiacs from the Scott Shaffer Collection, including an original unrestored 1969 Ram Air III Firebird Trans Am that is one of 697 built and one of just 14 with Parchment Paper interior. A second is a frame-off concours-restored 1970 GTO Judge Ram Air IV with a matching-numbers 400/370hp engine and a rare factory black-on-black color combination, while a third is a 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge with a 400/366hp engine, four-speed transmission and 19 factory options.
