Mecum Auctions’ annual spring auction in Kansas City, Missouri, held in late April, yielded $8,678,668 in total sales and a 65 percent sell-through rate. Of the 574 cars that crossed the block, 370 were scooped up by eager buyers among a full crowd of bidders.
The auction’s top sale was a 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback. As the first Candyapple Red Boss 429 built and sold, the car demonstrated its desirability with a $260,000 hammer price. Offered complete with comprehensive ownership history and the original build sheet, KK #1238 is documented as one of the first 50 hand-built prototype 429s. The second-highest sale was a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split-Window Coupe. Its instantly recognizable split rear window appeared for just one model year, so these Corvettes are always a hot commodity. The restored, Red-on-Red example that crossed the auction block in Kansas City brought $107,000.
