RAF National Service entrance examination papers, completed by Mike Hawthorn in the 1950s, were sold by COYS at the Autosport International Racing Car Show, Birmingham, for a staggering £7,351. The papers are concrete proof that Hawthorn, who was hounded by Fleet Street during the early 1950s for failing to serve his country, did indeed volunteer for such service. Completed in his own hand, Hawthorn interestingly described his employment as, “working for Scuderia Ferrari in the Driving Department.” The papers were offered for sale by the corporal who was the invigilator at the Officer and Air Crew Selection board.
Another interesting item, Sir Stirling Moss’s 1963–1968 Passport, sold for £1,470.
