There was a time, when I was at school, when much of the energy of me and my mate, Dave, went into the design of our Austin Seven Specials. We even sent away to the 750 MC for the regulations. Dave still reckons that Lotus owes us royalties for coming up with the T72 years before its time.
Perhaps a rear-engined A7 special would not have worked. There were two strikes against it, one was the two-inch prop shaft and the other was our joint mechanical ineptitude. We were lured by the dreams peddled by suppliers to the special-building industry that arose during the 1950s.
