I once accepted a commission to write a book called AZ of Sports Cars. It was to cover the post-war period and I went through a few reference books and figured that would mean about 200 makes. In the end, I found nearly 900 makes and they included the Phoenix from Egypt, the Tora from the Phillipines and—just as a footnote—a guy in Montevideo making HRG reproductions. HRGs used Singer components and the Singer importer in Bolivia was a whiz at selling them to farmers, as one sells Volvos nowadays. However, time goes by and there were Singers in scrapyards. What do you do?
It goes without saying that I discovered even more makes of sports cars between the final draft and publication.
