Then: Small-bore sports and open-wheel cars power together through VIR's fast, uphill Esses in 1960. Note the trees, cars and people close to the track.

The first time I went to VIR-ginia International Raceway was in 1960, and road courses like this pastoral gem were normal. You expected to see fast curves through a natural, naked landscape. For me, anyway, there was a tingly sense of drama and magnitude arising from both the simple purity of the set- ting and the obvious raw risk.
I saw how much our sport has changed when I revisited VIR in 2003—because the track doesn’t seem to have changed at all.
