Lola won the first Can-Am Championship in 1966 with John Surtees driving the T70-Chevrolet; however, from that point on the series evolved over the next four years into the “Bruce and Denny show” with McLaren dominant. In 1971, Lola fielded the T260-Chevrolet driven by none other than Jackie Stewart, and this combination provided McLaren with its stiffest competition throughout the 10 race season.
By the time the series reached Laguna Seca, the penultimate race of the year, the T260 had sprouted an enormous front wing in a desperate bid to glue the front end to the road. Although McLaren were still victorious with Peter Revson in the M8F, Stewart had thrilled the fans with a string of spirited drives that secured two outright wins, two 2nd place finishes and a 3rd place standing in the overall Championship.
