Another historic group has been formed to organize and run a Targa Florio Retrospective. The new group is made up of the 1965 and 1971 winner Nino Vaccarella, the Automobile Club of Palermo (organizers of the actual race until it was abolished in 1973), and the Scuderia del Portello (a 20-year-old gentleman racer organization with close links to Alfa Romeo.) The new group will run the event for the next six years starting November 2-4, 2001.
According to Vaccarella, “Next November, the Targa Florio will return as the greatest celebration of motor racing. My friends and I – the real keepers of the Targa Florio legend – actually organized and raced in the original event, so we are the right people to bring it back to life. For those who love vintage motor racing, this Targa Florio will be the last real adventure.”
All models that took part in the original Sicilian road race can be admitted and will compete in two separate events for either high-speed rallying or regularity competition. For more, see the organizers’ Web site www.scuderiadelporto.org
