We’re all creatures of water. Millions of years ago we emerged from a boiling primordial stew as multi-cell organisms, evolved in the oceans, and then ambitiously emerged from the water to become oxygen breathing land inhabitants. Our living bodies are 60-percent water. Our brain is a whopping 75-percent water. Yet, the fluid that sustains our life offers more than just biological benefits.
Turns out, all this genetic connection to water deeply inspires our creativity and impacts a vast majority of our manmade objects. Nowhere is this more evident than in the design of cars. Fluids have three strikingly important visual properties that inspire car designers to use them in our design process. First, they are reflective. A still pool of water will reflect our image back, shimmer in the sunlight or return the twinkle of distant stars. Fluids also conform to the will of the vessel we have crafted, giving flexibility to the shape we dictate. Finally, fluids are incompressible, powerful forces of nature that surge and recede, often moving around and within us with a great deal of mystery. This power both comforts us and leaves us in awe.
