“If Moss’s win in the Rob Walker-entered, 2-liter T-45 Mk3 Cooper at Argentina in early 1958 came as a surprise, Maurice Trintignant put the message clearly on the wall at Monaco in May. Driving an Alf-Francis modified, Walker-entered, 2-liter Mk3, the unobtrusive veteran set a new record while winning against the might of the Grand Prix establishment. The relaxed, gallant “Petoulet” spent the race quietly and very consistently working through the five-car Ferrari onslaught, which saw some very spirited efforts on the part of the defending drivers. The crowd’s heart, nonetheless, belonged with the Frenchman and the agile Cooper, which had a smoking engine the entire race distance.”
