Mountaineers have their El Capitans, their Eiger North Walls, their Everests. For racers too, certain challenges rise above all others. Le Mans stands among the highest. That’s why I have empathy for 60-year-old Mario Andretti’s apparently quixotic quest to add victory at The Sarthe to his already incredible tally of accomplishments.
I was just there, and while Mario did not succeed – did not in fact gild his reputation – I think I understand the lure of the thing for him.
