The Collier Automotive Museum in Naples, FL was the recent site of a 4-day symposium on the collection and restoration of sports cars. Entitled “Connoisseurship of the Sporting Car,” the event was sponsored by the Collier Museum and Christie’s Auction House to benefit several underprivileged children’s foundations in Southwest Florida.
Speakers for this unique event included author and motorsports historian Doug Nye, American F1 Champion and restorer Phil Hill, corrosion authority Robert Baboian, David Gooding of Christie’s, Miles Collier, archivist Ray Nugent and restorer Paul Russell, amongst others.
Over the course of the 4-day program, participants split their time between formal talks, hands-on demonstrations, museum tours, informal discussion groups and catered meals.
The symposium concluded with a hands-on exercise for the participants to demonstrate what they had learned. Broken down into groups of 5-6, each group was assigned a car to evaluate in the museum’s shop and then report their conclusions.
