Alberto Ascari intrigues me – while I can’t claim to know a great deal about him. Like so many of the truly gifted drivers, his eyes were so striking, while his face was almost ordinary in the manner of Fangio, and so unlike the empassioned, almost madly driven men like Nuvolari or Varzi. His personal style was affable and malleable. The passion burned brightly beyond the surface.
Numerology, superstition, religion, the history of his father killed in a racing car – woven into a collection of stupefying coincidence or fate – these were inextricable from the brilliance that won for Alberto Ascari two world championships, in 1952 and 1953. And there are mysteries….
