There is plenty to celebrate about Aston Martin, not least its survival skills as the automotive Houdini. A question remains: Why it was so unsuccessful in racing during most of the 1950s? Had it been better managed, it should have vied with Ferrari.
David Brown had inherited an industrial empire, which he grew to encompass ship building and tractors. He had wanted to race cars, but family pressure prevented that. He was not unknown to take a car out at Le Mans, while the race was going on.
