The 18th Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival took place last weekend, with more than 200 cars contesting 11 run groups of the annual event, run under the auspices of the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association for the first time this year. Hot and sunny skies greeted both participants and the multitude of spectators who came to Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego for the event.
Among the exciting contests they witnessed was a Historic Trans-Am race where leader Walter Brown (1970 Camaro) almost lost his win with a fumble in the final corner, but recovered to edge runner-up Ken Epsman (1971 Javelin) at the flag. Cal Meeker was the weekend’s only double winner, taking the checkered flag first in both the combined Groups 5 and 7 race for Sports Racing Cars with his 1973 Lola T292, and Group 9 for “Wings and Slicks” with his 1979 Ralt RT-1.
