There is a story that has troubled me. On the evening before the first postwar Monte Carlo Rallye in 1949, there was a social event for those competitors who started from Monte Carlo. Teams began the rally from all over Europe and converged on a common route. Louis Chiron, turned on another competitor, Mlle. Hellé Nice, and accused her of being an agent for the Gestapo during the German occupation of France.
No accusation could have been more lethal, given the fact that collaboration with the Germans had been widespread in France and the memory of it hurt.
