Highlighting RM Sotheby’s February 3 sale during the world-famous Retromobile show week in Paris will be a rare 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder, chassis no. 550-0068, which was the original Frankfurt Motor Show car in 1955. The 550 Spyder is among the most iconic of all Porsche sports racing cars, based on the legendary 356 and designed specifically for competition. The 550 Spyder was originally unveiled at the 1953 Paris Auto Show, charming onlookers with its low-slung, aerodynamic body and potent mechanicals. The car on offer boasts racing history in North America during the 1950s. The 550 Spyder will be joined at the sale by another iconic German car from 1955, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing.” Any Gullwing is an auction highlight, and the restored example offered at the Paris sale, chassis no. 5500272, is no exception. Both cars will be among a handpicked roster of approximately 60 fine automobiles slated for the evening sale on February 3 at Place Vauban.
