Terror Over Brussels
Dear Editor,
I must urge you to reconsider the excellent winter vegetable the “brussel sprout” and draw your attention to the fact that it is spelt with a single “l” [First Turn, Feb, 2012]. The humble brussel sprout, and other vegetables, were served by my mother to our family as the Luftwaffe rained their evil bombs down on the citizens of London during the dark days of the blitz in WWII.
The brussel sprout, or “boy scouts” as they are known in cockney rhyming slang, remains a staple vegetable for our family to this day. Please give them a chance!
As always, another excellent issue of your magazine, which remains at the top of my “must” read list.
Yours most Sincerely,
David Amette

Dear Sprout,
I’m surprised that you would still fancy the dreaded “mini-shrub” after having so many bad memories associated with its consumption? While it is not well known, the Luftwaffe experimented with dropping these little VMDs (Vegetables of Mass Destruction) on populated cities—Brussells being its test target (and thus where the name comes from)—but after analyzing the results they determined that it was too cruel, even for them!
All the best,
Casey Annis, Editor
