As usual Vintage Racecar had the most comprehensive obituary of a British motorsport figure in the form of the late Derek Gardner. There are a couple of little points I would like to add to Mike Jiggle’s very good tribute. Tyrrell 001 made its race debut at the non-championship Gold Cup at Oulton Park in August 1970. It finished 7th from the back of the grid, with Sir Jackie Stewart driving in the first heat. They non-started the second heat, but Stewart’s fastest lap from Heat One was not beaten in Heat Two. Stewart then practiced 001 at the Italian Grand Prix, but raced the March 701. As rightly stated, 001 then made its World Championship debut at the 1970 Canadian Grand Prix. The picture of 001 at Oulton Park is 1970, not 1971 as Tyrrell entered no cars for the 1971 race.
