Bonhams Quail Lodge 2012 – Auction Preview

Ford GT40 for sale

The Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction 2012 will be held August 16-17 at the Quail Lodge in Carmel, California. Bonhams’ two-day sale, held annually during Monterey Classic Car Week, moves to a new, larger and much more accommodating venue on the existing Quail Lodge grounds.

The 15th annual Bonhams Quail Lodge auction, held in connection with The Quail, A Motorsport Gathering, will feature approximately 150 cars and motorcycles, highlighted by the 1997 McLaren F1 GTR; 1966 Ford GT40; 1895 Buffum 4-Cylinder Stanhope; 1950 Cisitalia Abarth 204; 1966 Lola T70 Mk II; 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Comp Spyder; among others.

The McLaren F1 GTR at the 2012 Bonhams Quail Lodge auction, chassis 028R, is the 28th McLaren F1 GTR produced by the British McLaren Cars factory in Woking, Surrey, the last of that final year’s batch of only ten highly developed ‘Longtail’ cars. These competition coupes were the ultimate development of McLaren’s entire Le Mans-winning F1 GTR family. Chassis 028R is painted in Gulf Oil’s legendary pale-blue and orange team livery, similar to the Ford GT40 and Porsche 917K of an earlier era.

“We are delighted to have been appointed by an international collector to represent this breathtaking piece of competition machinery,” says Mark Osborne, Head of Motoring at Bonhams. “Racing legends like the McLaren F1 GTR rarely if ever appear at auction and Bonhams’ appointment speaks volumes about our leadership in this sector of the market.”

In 2011, Bonhams offered 129 vehicles for sale, with 62 finding a new owner, reflecting an 48% sales rate. Total sales volume was $10,211,765, inclusive of buyer’s premiums. The average price per vehicle sold was $164,706. Top sale went to a 1957 BMW 507 Roadster that brought $1,002,500, followed by the 1966 Porsche Type 906 Carrera Competition Coupe at $898,000.
