The Historic Motor Sports Association (HMSA) Sommet des Legendes was held July 11-13, 2014 at Circuit Mont-Tremblant in Canada. Ferrari was the featured marque at this year’s historic car race, which also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 2.65-mile, 15-turn road course in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec.
Formerly known as Saint Jovite, the demanding Circuit Mont-Tremblant has a proud history, opening in 1964 and twice hosting the Canadian Grand Prix of the Formula One World Championship. Additionally, the legendary Canadian-American Challenge Cup or Can-Am series produced a number of its most memorable contests on the circuit following its 1966 debut there, won by racing great John Surtees in a Lola T70.
The line-up of Ferrari racers at the 2014 HMSA Mont-Tremblant historic races included the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO (3467GT) of Sandra McNeil; 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta of Herb Wetanson; 1979 Ferrari 512 BB/LM of Todd Morici; 1963 Ferrari 250P of Stephen Hill and the 1972 Ferrari 312 PB of Steven Read.
In addition to Ferrari, the event also fielded a Masters HGP class with a mouth-watering entry list of historic Formula One cars from the 1970s and 1980s. The entrants were headed by the ex-Gilles Villeneuve 1980 Ferrari 312T5 of Bud Moeller and the ex-Alan Jones Williams FW07 in the hands of Charles Nearburg. Chris Locke’s Lotus 77 and Mario Andretti’s 1976 season car delighted Lotus fans, while the British March constructor was represented thanks to the ex-Hans Stuck 741 of Steve Cook, Ronnie Peterson’s 761 in the hands of Howard Cherry and Bob Blain in the ex-Vittorio Brambilla 751. Masters HGP prime-mover Ron Maydon had his unique Amon F101 on the grid to take on Irishman James Hagan in the ex-Michele Alboreto Tyrrell 011, the type of car that claimed victory at Detroit in 1983.
More Formula 1 variety came from Brian Blain’s ex-Teddy Pilette BRM P207, Doug Mockett’s iconic Wolf WR6 that raced in period by Jody Scheckter and Keith Frieser was in his 1973 Shadow DN1. A much later DN9B1 is on the grid for Charles Warner having been raced in 1980 by Jan Lammers. The earliest car on the grid was the Tyrrell 002 of former FIA Masters Historic Formula One Champion John Delane who gave the later cars a run for their money.
In addition to the screaming F1 racers and fabulous Ferraris, the HMSA Sommet des Legendes 2014 also hosted the Alfa Romeo 8C 2600 Monza of Peter Greenfield; 1930 Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3 of Peter Giddings; 1971 Martini and Rossi Porsche 917 of Greg Galdi; 1958 Lotus Eleven of Arthur Cook; 1961 Cooper T-56 of Doug Mockett; 1960 Aston Martin DB4 GT of Herb Wetanson; 1970 Porsche 908/3 of Cameron Healey and 2005 Audi R8 LMP of Travis Engen; among others.

I LOVE the main image of Gilles’ 1980 Ferrari 312 T5! Simply stunning!
Gilles Villeneuve was still in Formula Atlantic in 1975. The 312-T5 is from 1980, not 1975. The reason it has #2 on it is because Gilles allowed his team mate, Jody Scheckter to win the World Championship the previous year, in 1979…
I was there on the Saturday. Such a great event. Unrestricted paddock access to drivers and car. It was a wonderful day. As a proud Canadian lad, being able to lay hands on that T5 was pretty special. Great pictures.

Fantastic photos Dennis, but where is Martin Lauber’s car?
Great stuff Dennis. Love the shots or the cars in the rain.

Here’s an early vote for Best Pic of the Year – either the Alfa Romeo Monza and Ferrari 250P in the rain.
One of these years I’ll make it up there to race. Your photos are the next best thing to being there.
