Lord March opened the gates of his estate to members of the media for the annual taster for Goodwood’s Festival of Speed and Revival meetings. Under the banner “Viva Veloce!—The Passion for Speed,” the July 2–4 Festival of Speed will celebrate the Italian influence on motor racing with a number of significant motor sport and automotive anniversaries. Some of those being recognized are: 100 years of Alfa Romeo; 60 years of Formula One; 60 years of the opening of the Mexican leg of the Carrera Panamericana; 50 years of Bathurst’s Great Race; and a special tribute to the late Frank Gardner.
The 2010 Goodwood Revival, set for September 17-19, should provide another very special weekend, with mouth-watering grids, scintillating on-track action, and a number of significant anniversaries to celebrate. It was 50 years ago this year, in March 1960, that John Surtees began his switch to four wheels, entering a Formula Junior race at Goodwood and finishing a close 2nd to Jim Clark. Within a matter of months he had scored his first pole position and podium finish in Formula One, and in 1964 he became F1 World Champion. The Revival will pay tribute to John, with a gathering of the landmark cars that shaped his unparalleled career. On September 30, 1950, the fledgling British Racing Motors team scored its first victory, at Goodwood, when Reg Parnell won the Woodcote Cup, and the Revival will celebrate those 60 years with the biggest display of BRM machinery ever seen.
Summing up, Lord March said: “It will be fabulous to have so many great cars and drivers here at Goodwood to celebrate our Italian-flavored Viva Veloce! theme for 2010. I look forward with much anticipation to seeing some of the greatest drivers, riders, and machines in action. The Revival is theater, the circuit is literally dressed up like a huge film set, and that includes the competitors and spectators.”
