There was a summer of my life when I often walked back home from an evening ramble in a European city to the outlying village where I had a job in a sawmill. A lengthy stretch of the way was dead straight and lit in the eerie orange of sodium vapor lamps. This road was almost always deserted that late at night, and frequently the air was misty, so the long line of lights faded away into nothingness both before me and behind. It was like floating in a void, removed from reality.
Naturally, my mind kept dwelling on Cobras.
