The year 2017 is shaping up to be memorable for a number of anniversaries: the 60th anniversary of Formula Junior; 60th anniversary of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca; and the 70th anniversary of one of the most recognizable brands in the world, Ferrari. These occasions, and much more, will be celebrated at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion August 17-20 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Returning to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion for the first time since 2013 are the sleek Formula Juniors that ran between 1958 and 1963. Celebrating its Diamond Jubilee World Tour at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, there will be two groups to accommodate the unprecedented number of 71 entries received, making it the largest group of Formula Juniors to assemble in North America. Cars from Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, and from across the United States will be arriving for this special occasion.
“So far the Tour has visited South Africa, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and to have two grids at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is an absolute honor to us,” says Duncan Rabagliati, chairman of the Formula Junior Historic Racing Association. “Monterey stands with Monaco, Goodwood, Silverstone Classic, and Philip Island as the great quintet of the World’s Historic Motor Racing events. In 2008, FJ’s were present during our Golden Jubilee Celebrations, and it’s just fantastic to be returning again for our current celebrations.”
Adding to the overall Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion experience is the iconic Prancing Horse of Ferrari, which will undoubtedly be seen on the track and throughout Monterey Classic Car Week as it celebrates its 70th anniversary.
“It is such a fitting tribute to honor a brand that has its roots deeply planted in Monterey,” explained Gill Campbell, CEO and general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. “In fact, a Ferrari 500 Testa Rossa driven by Pete Lovely has the distinction of being the very first car to win the inaugural race at then-named Laguna Seca Raceway when it opened November 1957.”
The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion has matured over the decades to become much more than a showcase of exemplary historic and period-correct cars racing at an iconic venue. It is a lifestyle experience where like-minded premium brands assemble to celebrate motoring’s finest cars with enthusiastic collectors, racers, fans and journalists.
