In my book Vintage American Road Racing Cars, I wrote, “Of all the Kurtis road racing cars, the 500X is shrouded in the most mystery regarding how many cars were constructed. By some accounts as many as 12 were built, but some believe six or even fewer cars were actually delivered.” While this statement remains as true as ever, this month’s Hidden Treasure takes us one step closer to solving the Kurtis 500X puzzle.
The 500X was introduced in 1955 and was a significant departure from the other sports cars Frank Kurtis was building at the time. Unlike the 500S, M, and KK which were all built on similar ladder frames, the X was designed on an all-new space frame. The S’s cycle-fendered look was gone, and in its place, a wonderful, fully-enveloped aluminum skin took hold.
