The Artcurial Automobiles sur les Champs 2013 auction was held 10 June in Paris, resulting in €8.7-million in total sales and a 90% sell-through rate. The 5th auction in Artcurial’s ‘Automobiles Sur Les Champs’ series of Paris sales was held, for the first time, in the Theatre du Rond-Point, opposite the Artcurial headquarters on the Champs Elysees in Paris, to accommodate the international audience attending the sale.
The Lecoq Collection and the ASA Collection both sold well with many lots changing hands for prices well above pre-sale estimates. The top result at the Artcurial Automobiles sur les Champs 2013 sale went to the 1939 Horch 853A Cabriolet from the Lecoq Collection that sold for €685,900, well above the €280,000 to €360,000 pre-sale estimate, while the 1965 ASA 411GT went home for a record €186,500 against the estimate of €50,000 to €80,000.
The majority of cars will remain in France, including lot 257, the 1935 Bugatti 57 Gangloff that sold for €559,400, which came to the sale from outside France and now returns home. Some thirteen cars sold to Eastern Europe, with many others going to collectors from other European countries and the US.
Maître Hervé Poulain, who conducted the sale, commented, “It is extraordinary for an auctioneer to hold a sale in a theatre. It was a fitting tribute to the celebrated coachbuilder that, in a very lively atmosphere, such high prices were achieved, with the cars selling to collectors from around the world, notably Russia and the US.”

Artcurial’s next sale will be held in Monaco on 22 July 2013 in the Hotel Hermitage. The cars on offer will be displayed in the museum housing H.S.H The Prince of Monaco’s collection of cars at the Terrasses de Fontvieille, from 20 to 22 July.
Matthieu Lamoure, managing director of Artcurial Motorcars, said, “We are delighted to be returning to Monaco, following last year’s sale where I achieved a “White Glove” result for the collection of cars belonging to H.S.H Prince Rainier III.”
This year Artcurial will offer the entire collection of 45 prestigious cars, classic and contemporary, belonging to a Monégasque collector. These include a LHD 1948 Bentley MK VI Coupé by Hooper, estimate €60,000 – 80,000 and a green Aston Martin DB9 Volante, estimate €80,000 – 100,000. The entire collection will be offered at no reserve.
The collector has been fastidious in wanting all his cars to offer the highest levels of reliability and performance, and the older vehicles in the collection are low mileage and have benefitted from no-expense spared restorations.
