VR’s European team will host the reunion of the Nomad-BRM team at the forthcoming Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery, the biggest and best such show in the UK, November 10-12. Driver and team owner Mark Konig, designer Bob Curl and mechanic Julian Pratt will unveil the recently restored Nomad Mk3-BRM on the VR stand at Birmingham’s National Event Centre (Premier Hall, stand 1-40).
Neil Fowler Motorsport of Bourne, Lincolnshire, has undertaken the excellent restoration work and both Fowler and Simon Ayliff (above, with Mk3) from the company will be on hand to answer questions. Also on scene will be Peter Wunsch, the new owner of Nomad Mk3, who successfully completed 65 laps of the Donington race circuit at a recent test. The car, the last model of the three, has very limited European racing history, as it was mainly raced in the South African Springbok series during the 1970-’71 season by Mark Konig and Sir Paul Vestey. After being sold, the BRM engine was replaced by a Ford V6 and later a Porsche flat-6 unit. Installing the latter meant heavily revising the spaceframe chassis. Today, using original drawings, the car once again has BRM power — indeed the same engine that took Graham Hill to victory at the 1964 Monaco GP.
The VR stand will also be displaying an number of other iconic cars, including: the Rob Walker-entered Lotus 18 that Sir Stirling Moss drove to victory around the streets of Monte Carlo in 1961; a 1961 Series 1 flat-floor E-Type Jaguar; a TWR Jaguar XJR-14, winner of both driver and constructor championships in 1991; and lastly, the ex-Jacky Ickx Formula Two Matra. Thanks to Duke DVD, visitors signing up for a 12-month subscription to VR will be given a copy of the new Matra – The Rebirth DVD. This DVD shows period history of the competitive and victorious Matra racing cars, and includes interviews from some of those close to the cars in period — Sir Jackie Stewart, Jean-Pierre Beltoise, Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Henri Pescarolo — with additional pieces by Damon and Josh Hill (son and grandson of Matra Le Mans victor Graham Hill), David Brabham (son of Sir Jack Brabham), Mauro Forghieri and Derek Bell. Added to the period history, the film moves forward to show how the beauty and success of the racing marque can still be enjoyed today — thanks in no small part to Abe Kogan, “Mr. Matra” as the film dubs him.
