I recently crossed another one of those landmarks that make you pause and consider your age and life. My youngest daughter just got her learner’s permit. There’s something about seeing your youngest, behind the wheel, that is kind of bittersweet. After 15 and one-half years of me driving her around, she’s now eager to get behind the wheel and relegate me to the passenger seat…anxiously stomping away at an imaginary brake pedal that doesn’t exist.
Thought it seems like eons ago, I can still remember going to the DMV, taking my written test and getting my permit. It was heady stuff for a car crazy kid and very empowering. It was a right of passage and I felt, if not more adult, than at least more adult-adjacent as a result. Despite all the current discussion that kids today are not interested in driving, if my daughter is any indication, getting your license is still a big deal. Yet, interestingly, this wasn’t always the case.
