For the film Le Mans with Steve McQueen and Siegfried Rauch, many cars and drivers were needed, to show what the character and mood was, back in the ’70s, of motor racing at the Sarthe. Among the many professional drivers enlisted was David Piper. He lost his leg during the filming, which gave McQueen the idea to call the film a “bloodbath.” To me the Le Mans film is made for enthusiasts of GT racing, who can imagine the difficulties to make such a film. It is not for people who do not know anything about racecars or Le Mans. But for Le Mans maniacs, it is always an event to watch this film.
This painting shows the battle for victory in the last lap. Ferrari pilot Stahler has the chance to overtake the slightly slower Porsche #22, but Mike Delaney (McQueen) in the other Porsche blocks Stahler (Siegfried Rauch) on the fast straight after Arnage corner. At the end, Johannsson in the #22 wins the 24 hour race in this film.
