Prior to the early ’70s, safety issues were given little attention in Formula One and, by association motorsport in general. However, as a result of several horrific accidents and fatalities, one brave driver stepped to the fore to demand better safety measures. That driver was three-time World Champion Jackie Stewart. Recently, VR’s Mike Jiggle caught up with Stewart and found him in an expansive mood as they looked at his long involvement in the development of safer motor racing.
You are renowned as being one of the original architects of motor racing safety. What started your campaign to champion such issues?
