Formula Junior was the class of choice for ambitious young drivers and between 1958 through until the end of 1959, a Stanguellini was the car to have. Securing a reputation as the definitive front engined Junior, it notched up over 40 national and international victories plus several major championships. Famously, the Stanguellini FJ also launched the careers of Wolfgang Von Trips and Lorenzo Bandini, both of whom went on to drive for Ferrari in F1 during the 1960’s.
Stanguellini Formula Junior For Sale
Stanguellini Formula Junior Details: Car is listed for sale on eBay; located in Houston. The Stanguellini is currently bid to $40,100 with two days left on the auction. The current bid does not meet the seller’s reserve.
Seller Comments: “Chassis No. CS00148 Engine No. 1040810 — Italian manufacturer Stanguellini built the quintessential Formula Junior racing cars of the 1958 – 1960 time period. Approximately half the production of almost one hundred similar cars made its way to the USA to be deployed in numerous racing events. With rules at that time requiring a certain amount of production-based components to be installed, the Stanguellini provided for fun driving at reasonable cost.
CS00148 is particularly famous as it appeared on the cover of Road and Track magazine in April of 1960 just as Formula Junior was getting truly hot in the USA. Because of that fame, it is one of very few cars to have been advertised at times with the chassis number featured prominently in the advertisement.”
“The car made good history in California early on and has an almost continuously known ownership history including at least one short stint in Texas. Now it is back. The car displayed has not been subject to modifications outside the Formula Junior concept.”
Sports Car Digest Comments: The 2008 Sports Car Market price guide suggests a $40,000 – $50,000 price range for a Stanguellini Formula Junior. The seller did not respond to Sports Car Digest’s request for more information about the car’s “good history,” and to whether or not the drivetrain was original to the car.
If in fact this Stanguellini does have a good, known history that includes racing, and it still has the original Fiat bits, then prepare to pay through Sports Car Market’s upper price range. And it would be well worth it.
Formula Junior, via the Historic Formula Junior Racing Association, is celebrating its Golden Jubilee in 2008. This includes the Golden Jubilee World Series, which takes place all around the world, including Monterey Historics and Lime Rock Park.
