Russo and Steele will feature several rare and collectible automobiles form the Jim Foust Collection at their August 18–19 Sports and Muscle in Monterey Collector Automobile Auction. Some of the more significant cars from the Foust Collection will be a Full Competition 427 Cobra and a Ford Galaxie 427 R Model.
Continuing with their tradition of offering significant Shelby American automobiles at their Monterey sale, Russo and Steele will offer the ex-Lothar Motschenbacher 1965 Shelby 427 Cobra Full Competition (CSX3012). This example is one of only 22 full competition models to leave the factory. Motschenbacher campaigned this car in the ’66 USRRC Championship. Subsequently, the car was returned to Shelby American and rented to MGM to be used in the 1966 Elvis Presley movie “Spinout.” Elvis and CSX3012 are prominently featured on the album cover. According to the auction company, this Cobra includes complete ownership history, thorough documentation, has a Concours quality restoration and has garnered significant awards on both show field and track.
The other interesting racecar from the Foust collection is a 1963 1/2 Ford Galaxie 427 “R” Model. In 1963, Ford got very serious about racing, and by mid-1963, they released a limited number of 427 “R” models. These cars came with a mighty 7-liter engine that produced 425 horsepower and featured a lower roofline for better aerodynamics, 15-inch wheels (14 was standard), bigger brakes, stronger driveline and a 4-speed transmission. These cars proved successful on the drag strip, as well as the superspeedway.
These cars plus the Shelby prototype Trans-Am Mustang, the 1938 Indy “Blue Crown Special” and many more will cross the auction block the evenings of August 18–19. For more information, please visit www.russoandsteele.com.
