The Monaco Grand Prix; Monte Carlo, May 22, 1955. The start of a dramatic race. Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss in the Mercedes W196 bracket Alberto Ascari’s Lancia D50 as Eugenio Castellotti’s Lancia follows closely. Both Mercedes retired, as did Castellotti’s Lancia, while Ascari dramatically crashed at the Chicane and went into the harbor while in the lead, leaving the victory to Maurice Trintignant’s Ferrari 625/F1. Although only shaken by his watery ordeal, Ascari was killed testing Castellotti’s Ferrari sports car at Monza a few days later. The independent Lancia F1 effort was brought to a close after the Belgian GP with the cars being turned over to Ferrari.
