The 2001 World Rally Champion Richard Burns died on Friday November 25 after a long battle with a brain tumor. He became the first English World Rally Champion, having appeared in the sport at a very young age. While not a “historic” personality, his passing is noted as he was largely responsible for the regeneration of interest in a struggling sport. His battles with Scot Colin McRae brought thousands of fans back to live events.
He collapsed after a late-2003 event, and had been criticized for his recent performances, but soon it was discovered he had a serious tumor. Treatment relieved the symptoms but he knew he would not survive when symptoms returned. He made a number of appearances last year. He was only 34.
