There is a minor industry in new James Bond novels and if we include Young James Bond and the Moneypenny series there are more than three dozen. Anthony Horowitz has been commissioned to write a new novel, due in September, which will be set in the glamorous world of Grand Prix racing in the 1950s.
This intrigued me, and I wondered how I would tackle the exercise. First thing to consider is the year, because the 1950s was a decade of enormous change as Europe recovered from WWII. German cars and drivers had been excluded from international racing until 1950. Britain had food rationing until 1954. The terrible accident at Le Mans in 1955 caused the demise of some races and the banning of circuit racing in Switzerland.
