Dear Editor,
I enjoyed reading the letter from Tom Schmidt in the current issue (July). He was with Enco and Mecom, and tells about the winning Mecom Ferrari running on Enco fuel rather than the track’s obligatory Union 76 fuel. I was at that race, and took many photographs, including several of the Ferrari. I am attaching a shot, which shows Augie Pabst in the car, and one can clearly see that the car carried stickers of both Enco and the Tiger mascot/logo. I suspect that those stickers were not applied until the last moment, in order to circumvent the Union 76 rules. Once the race had started, what were they going to do, black flag the car? Gamesmanship at work!
I also read Mark Brinker’s article about the Excalibur transporter with interest. I saw it “in action” many times in the 1977-’80 years as then, as now, I attended all races in the area. The shot I am attaching is of Brooks Stevens seated in front of the transporter, watching as the team’s Lola T460 is being prepped.
