In 1966, Jack Brabham adapted one of his F1 chassis to accommodate a 2-liter BMW race motor for hill-climbing. This project soon manifested itself into BMW’s entry into F2 racing. For 1967, John Surtees’ team was hired to run a pair of Lola T100 chassis mated to a 1.6-liter BMW motor, but a host of DNFs caused by the unusual radial head motor hampered the team’s efforts. However, by 1969 BMW had hired Len Terry to design their own complete F2 car, which was to be constructed by Dornier, and would now run the 2-liter BMW M12 race motor, notching up five victories in 1970 at the hands of Jo Siffert, Jacky Ickx and Dieter Quester. In the end, while BMW’s efforts as an F2 manufacturer would be relatively short-lived, their engines would go on to dominate F2 for many years to come.
This month’s Website is one man’s labor of love and is devoted to the history of the BMW F2 cars from 1967–1970. Features of this site include a season by season list of results with pictures of each car entered, a brief history on each of the BMW F2 drivers, a short history on the F2 program and numerous pictures of the cars both then and now.
