Moved up a day to avoid impending storms on Sunday, the 22nd Annual Amelia Island Concours took place March 9-11 on the fairways of the Golf Club of Amelia Island on the grounds of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Amelia Island, Florida. More than 300 entries vied for top honors in 41 classes as well as Best of Show honors in two categories, Sport and Elegance.
Topping those overall categories were a 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider (above, left, photo courtesy of Amelia Island Concours) from the Dano Davis Collection as Best of Show Concours de Sport, and a 1935 Duesenberg Model SJ-582 (above, right, photo courtesy of Amelia Island Concours) owned by Terence Adderley that took honors as Best of Show Concours of Elegance.
“I’m extremely pleased with the judges’ decisions for the 2017 Amelia Island Concours winners,” commented event founder Bill Warner. “Both the Duesenberg Model SJ-582 and Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider are extravagant vehicles and we are thrilled to give them the praise they deserve.”
The rescheduled festivities got rolling Saturday morning as the event’s honoree, four-time Indy 500 winner and three-time Indycar National Champion Al Unser, drove onto the show field in a VPJ Lola T332 Formula 5000 car. Additional Unser-driven cars on display included a selection of his Indycars as well as the Porsche 962 he shared with A.J. Foyt, Bob Wollek and Thierry Boutsen while winning the 1985 Rolex 24 at Daytona, and one of the Camaros he raced in the International Race of Champions series.
Other celebrations featured the cars of Brumos Racing, the 50th Anniversary of Chevrolet’s Camaro, the 60th anniversary of Jaguar’s Hat Trick of Le Mans victories with its D-Type, the cars of Marmon and Streamliners, among others. The Jaguar celebration spotlighted two of the three Le Mans-winning D-Types and nine other examples of the model.
A complete list of class winners had yet to be released as we reached our deadline, but should be available shortly at www.ameliaconcours.org
