Eighty years after his father contested the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb, Hans-Joachim Stuck will do the same, driving a replica of his father’s Auto Union Type C Grand Prix car. On Saturday July 16 and Sunday July 17, the two-time World Sportscar Champion and 1990 DTM titlist will pay tribute to his father by repeating Hans Stuck’s heroic 1936 attempt at the world’s oldest motorsport venue in continuous use. Just like his father, Stuck will be trying to control the Type C’s massive supercharged 16-cylinder engine and contending with its 520 horsepower as he tries to forge it up the hill.
History shows that despite intermittent rain showers and bothersome wheelspin, he Senior Stuck clocked a run of 45.2 seconds to secure not only victory in the over-five-liters Supercharged class, but top time of the day as well. Now his son will seek to replicate the feat — more or less — and will no doubt thrill all those in attendance with his expertise.
