A 1956 Avia Streamliner from Czechoslovakia (above) will highlight Russo and Steele’s upcoming 3rd Annual Newport Beach Collector Automobile auction, set for June 3-5. The extremely rare Avia racecar features a steel frame with envelope bodywork made of aluminum and magnesium, and power from a 750cc BMW four-stroke engine.
An advanced design for its time, the car features fully independent suspension front and rear as well as a trans-axial gearbox. It was raced in the Eastern bloc and Austria until being seized by the communist authorities. It passed through the hands of various collectors before arriving the USA in 1987, and was shown at Pebble Beach, The Quail and Hillsborough Concours, as well as racing in numerous historic events.
Among the many other scars also crossing the block during the Southern California auction will be a sleek Peerless GT coupe built on Triumph TR3 mechanicals, a Triumph-based Devin special with documented SCCA race history and a two-owner example of the 1957 Mille Miglia-winning Abarth 750 Zagato.
