Starting with the Winter Marathon Rally in January and ending with the Sebring Historic Races in December, Sports Car Digest covered a diverse range of 90 historic car races and rallies in 2014. Our award-winning team of photographers took tens of thousands of pictures, spending hours post-event analyzing and choosing the best ones in an effort to wow our readers. To celebrate the effect that these photographs have on us as well as the dozens of talented photographers who capture them, we have once again narrowed it down to the 50 best pictures of the year.
Narrowing it down to 50 certainly wasn’t easy, as the shots worthy of high praise number not in the dozens but in the many hundreds. The list is done, however, and similar to our Best of 2009, Best of 2010, Best of 2011, Best of 2012 and Best of 2013 contests, we are asking for your help picking the best vintage car racing photo from 2014.

I vote for the 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Monza at Hershey’s Grand Ascent Hill Climb.
57 OSCA does it for me!
1933 Alfa Romeo Monza 8C 2600 at the HMSA Sommet des Legendes at Circuit Mont-Tremblant (photo: Dennis Gray)
I also vote for the 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Monza at Hershey’s Grand Ascent Hill Climb.
This gets more and more difficult each year. Major congrats to all the photographers, but my vote goes to 1921 Alfa Romeo G1 team was all smiles at the Mille Miglia (photo: Julien Mahiels)
1933 Alfa Romeo Monza 8C 2600 at the HMSA Sommet des Legendes at Circuit Mont-Tremblant (photo: Dennis Gray)
Dennis Gray 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C at Circuit Mont- Tremblant
This one does it for me as well. Just love the spray shooting up from the tires, the angle and the compressed perspective.
Great shots all – but I my favorite is “1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Monza at Hershey’s Grand Ascent Hill Climb (photo: Michael DiPleco)” – page 4.
This could be the best I’ve ever seen: 1991 Lancia Delta Integrale at the Eifel Rallye Festival (photo: Julien Mahiels)
Oh my! Can I vote for the 1933 Alfa Romeo at the HMSA Sommet des Legendes at Mont Tremblant! So many great pictures.
So many great ones, but the D-Types at Goodwood have to take it. A great shot of an even that I can’t picture ever being repeated. Absolutely amazing shot.
So many great things going on in this picture: 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Monza at Hershey’s Grand Ascent Hill Climb (photo: Michael DiPleco)
My vote goes to the Start of the Moss Trophy at the Goodwood Members’ Meeting
I’ll second that. That’s the face of vintage racing right there.
1972 BMW CSL at Sebring International Raceway (photo: Michael DiPleco) I would know his work anywhere!
Impossible task, so I chose the one that hit me the hardest:
1968 Austin Mini Cooper S 1300 at the Tour Auto Rally (photo: Julien Mahiels)
When I first saw this picture, I thought it was a great picture. I still do!!
1968 Austin Mini Cooper S 1300 at the Tour Auto Rally (photo: Julien Mahiels)
The old adage “don´t shoot until you see the whites of their eyes”, is appropriate here. Thats the photograph taken by Victor Varela of the 1968 McLaren M6B at the Coronado Speed Festival…Even with a fast camera speed, he couldn´t stop all the action. What a brave photographer, standing so close…I enjoyed the whole selection, you certainally have some marvellous photographers capturing our chosen sport for us…
I have enjoyed looking at the various albums through the year.
My vote is for the Austin Cooper S in the Tour Auto, great composition, great little car
My smiles go to the Julien Mahiels photo of the 1921 Alfa Romeo at the Mille Miglia. Great action capture.
My vote goes for the very essence of the Mille Miglia and classic motoring: 1921 Alfa Romeo G1 team was all smiles at the Mille Miglia (photo: Julien Mahiels)
Julien, Julien, Julien–Delta Integrale or any of his shots really. He not only has a eye, composition-wise, but he is technically excellent as well. As someone who aspires to shoot this well, I know first hand how hard it is.
Thank you very much Mark !
1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Monza at Hershey’s Grand Ascent Hill Climb (photo: Michael DiPleco)
TT Riley,LeMans close 2nd
Alfa 8c Mont Tremblaunt 3rd
I vote for the 1957 OSCA in the Tour Auto Rally by Mahiels. Wonderfully captures the spirit of the moment. Also love the ’32 Alfa 8C, Hershey’s Hill Climb by DiPleco and the ’24 Bugatti at Goodwood by Mahiels.
Pair of Ford GT40s at Le Mans Classic (photo: Tim Scott)…… This is the one as far as I am concerned…these GT 40’s are the cars that made me a race car crazy my entire life! LOL
Love the speed captured in 1970 Chevron B16 by Victor Varela! Such a great clear and fast shot!
The belcher Mercedes SL gullying for me. Flaming exhausts.
1921 Alfa Romeo G1 team was all smiles at the Mille Miglia
The photo captures the excitement of Mille Miglia.
The Ferrari 250 GT SWB (not-quite-a-GTO !) “Breadvan”, through the brilliant yellow flowers, at Goodwood.
I vote for the #98 Watson Roadster, shot at Indianapolis. What a classic shot; Watson Roadster, open face helmet, with a red bandanna.
I vote for the two Maserati 250F”s at the Goodwood Members’ Meeting. Two iconic race cars running neck and neck into the braking area. I believe that this great photo has captured the essence of historic motor racing.
First, I would like to thank Jamie and the staff at SCD who graciously selected to included 2 of my images, to be part of the truly incredible collection of images that make up the gallery of the Best Vintage Car Racing Photos for 2014.
After reviewing all the images, my vote is for the stunning image of the 1957 OSCA 372 FS at the Tour Auto Rally, captured by Julien Mahiels. The colors, composition… simply beautiful.
I would like to mention the following images, as they made it particularly difficult for me to choose just one image for this. They are:
1969 Porsche 917 at Le Mans Classic, captured by Julien Mahiels
Ferrari 312 T5 at the HMSA Sommet des Legendes at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, captured by Dennis Gray
BMW M1 Procar at the Oldtimer Grand Prix, captured by Jurrie Vanhalle
I would like to congratulate all the photographers who’s images were chosen for this.
Thank you Victor for these kind words !
1933 Alfa Romeo Monza 8C 2600 at the HMSA Sommet des Legendes at Circuit Mont-Tremblant (photo: Dennis Gray), says it all. Another example from the professor.
1933 Alfa Romeo Monza 8C 2600 by Dennis Gray is my favorite photo – wonderful!
My vote goes to the ’32 Alpha Monza 8C.The photo captures both driver and vehicle.
Pat’s pick: 1933 Alfa Romeo Monza 8C 2600 at the HMSA Sommet des Legendes at Circuit Mont-Tremblant (photo: Dennis Gray)
Start of the Moss Trophy for me.
Without a doubt Julian Mahiels shot – 1921 Alfa Romeo G1 team was all smiles at the Mille Miglia
The Porsche 907 at Daytona. Beautiful shape and spectacular light.
All the photos are great! Thanks!
I’ll vote for 1957 OSCA 372 FS at the Tour Auto Rally, but it’s really a tough choice.
I don’t see how anyone can only vote for one of these fantastic photographs; there are just too many reasons for chosing! The cars we love most, moments in time not to be repeated, a design that sums up the period or event in motorsport with which we connect he most or just simply a fabulous photograph (like all of Julien’s). For me, I love the Cobra shot but I am also a Cooper S fan so I have to vote for that. I love the BT 42 shot,it visually sums up that period of F1 racing for me and that’s the period that I enjoyed most as a spectator. Finally, the D Type grid departure, Le Mans with Jaguar is where my interest started so that gets my vote too. If I was to hang one on the wall, however, it would be the shot of 644CGT on the Tour Auto.
My vote goes for: 1957 OSCA 372 FS at the Tour Auto Rally (photo: Julien Mahiels). aabarriosb@me.com
my favorite is….Lancia Stratos at the Eifel Rally
Wonderful photos of all the cars so very hard to choose. But as a memory of an excellent event my choice has to go to the D type grid at Goodwood.
Thank you to all the photographers.
Robert Mansfield
Awesome pics … truly one of the highlights of my week when I receive these emails with such eloquent pictures to fuel my appetite for racing. From the 50 pics, I have to give my nod to the “1976 Lancia Stratos at the Eifel Rallye Festival (photo: Julien Mahiels)” … fantastic colours and action (for a still).
I have to vote for Green flag for the Historic GT/GTP Enduro at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (photo: Michael DiPleco) because it is a great photo and of the significance of the event. For many of us this was a dream come true that we would never have had the grit to dream. I am 82 years old and was able to see my grand son drive my 1962 Sprite #048 in the Group 1 events and our Enduro. That make Michael DiPleco’s very special to me.
My name is Chris Newcomer, not “Anonymous” says
Thank you Chris, congrats to both yourself and your Grand Son.
What a wonderful selection and a difficult choice. However, the 1933 Alfa 8C at Mont-Tremblant sums up everything – classic car in a classsic stance with an involved driver, accentuated by the water spray! Great shot.
Very close, but I’ll vote for the fine shot of Julian Majzub’s glorious Alfa 308C at the Revival.
So hard to pick just one. I’ll go with the 8C at Mont-Tremblant, although the 907 LH at Daytona is pretty spectacular too! Thanks to all of the photographers for making Thursday mornings something to look forward to.
My vote goes for the Maserati A6GCS at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (photo: Tim Scott)
Just can’t do it. Every picture is so outstandingly entertaining that a favorite cannot be chosen – in fairness to the photographers and to those of us enjoying them.
Impossible! Too many outstanding shots. Pushed to the wall, I’d go with 1969 Porsche 917, or 1954 Cooper Jag, or even Ferrari 250 Short Wheelbase. See, impossible.
The photo of the Alfa Romeo Monza 8C in the rain at Circuit Mont Tremblan by Dennis Grey hits all the buttons – great action shot as it really is!! The D types still make me shudder – a tremendous gathering but the photo does not quite pip the Alfa for action. Great photos and great work.
Love the Alfa Monza 8C too, but my vote for best photo goes to the 1968 Mini Cooper at Tour Auto.
Living in Europe with its vast array of beautiful historic settings has its advantages most would agree, but my vote goes to Julian Mahiels. He’s a true artist behind his lens with a special eye for lighting and composition. I always enjoy viewing his work and in particular, I like his photograph of the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Breadvan at the Goodwood Members’ Meeting.
The shot of the mass of D Types at Goodwood will never be repeated, so for historical uniqueness and composition has to get my vote. Really so many amazing shots, but 3 others really stood out for me. The Lancia Stratos is all action and dramatically captures the struggle with the elements , the Brabham BT42 perfectly framed a whole era, and the pair of Maserati 250Fs is sheer rolling sculpture in perfect symmetry that is strikingly offset by their contrasting colors.
While my vote for was for the Mini Cooper, the picture of the BT42 also stood out, and your comment is spot on.
Maserati A6GCS at Goodwood FoS.
The picture of the Alfa Romeo Monza 8C on the wet stage is my favorite. A demonstration of passion to drive such cars nowadays with a mixture of “narrow” tyres sending two lines of raindrops backlit on both side of the drivers helmet. The Summit of Legends!
The Ferrari 312 T5 (Villeneuve tribute) by Dennis gray gets my vote as it tugs at the heart strings. Or anything by Juliens Mahiel.
’79 935 K3 at Daytona….always loved that car!
I 100% endorse Mark Coughlin’s comment. His ability to capture a vehicle within a broader environment takes things to a higher level. If I had to chose; the Mini in the Tour Auto gets my vote.
I Vote for :
1969 Porsche 917 at Le Mans Classic (photo: Julien Mahiels)
I was on the side of the track, it was amazing !
How can one pick? Any picture of a vintage race car being used for it sole purpose, is perfect and like a slice of Heaven!
My choice is 1978 Porsche 911 3.0 at the Eifel Rallye Festival (photo: Julien Mahiels).
1933 Alfa Romeo Monza 8C 2600 at the HMSA Sommet des Legendes at Circuit Mont-Tremblant (photo: Dennis Gray). Driver’s concentration, car color and detail. Visceral.
1921 Alfa Romeo G1 team all smiles at the Mille Miglia. Who wouldn’t smile???
64 TR4 #16 Love that picture with the leaves.
David Ferguson’s photo of the Lola T70 blowing by a Sunbeam captures speed and color magnificently.
My vote is for the 1937 Riley Sprite at the Le Mans Classic….a great shot
1933 Riley Sprite
For me, the photo that generated the most fun is the 1937 Riley TT Sprite at Le Mans Classic (photo: Julien Mahiels)
Looks like the North American cars were somewhat camera shy in 2014.
My pick: Maserati A6GCS at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (photo: Tim Scott)
“Best racing photo” must show actual racing, so all tour and rally pix are out. While you may be in a race going fast by yourself, the real sense of racing should show competition, i.e., more than one car in the shot. Your fav car is not a criteria. There are very few photos here that qualify. I chose the D Jag start. The 300SL and XK just needed to be a longer view to win.
A rally or tour is a race against time, i.e. a racing photo in every way possible. And who are you to tell someone that they shouldn’t vote for their favorite car or other criteria? While it seems unlikely that someone could dampen the spirit of this incredible assemblage of images, you’ve certainly given it your full effort. Well done.
My vote is for the 1976 Lancia Stratos at the Eifel Rallye Festival (photo: Julien Mahiels). It’s one of my favorite cars…and Julien captured it wonderfully in its natural environment.
I vote for the excellent pic of 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Monza at Hershey’s Grand Ascent Hill Climb. Thanks for the opportunity to vote.
Lots of excellent photos, but as an automotive artist for me Dennis Gray’s photo of the 1933 Alfa Romeo Monza 8C 2600 at the HMSA Sommet des Legendes at Circuit Mont-Tremblant is a cut above. The spray from the wheels captures a feeling of speed without the typical panned-streaked background.
It’s all Julien for me. the 1957 OSCA @ Tour Auto, just Killer. then the Mini@ Tour Auto, 1958 BRM because I like going away shots. And the stunning Maserati A6GCS @ Zoute.
When I make it to Europe can I hang with you.
The photo of the ’68 Mini Cooper S was the one that most made me feel the need to jump in the car and drive right now!
My favorite was Julien Mahiel’s photo of the Cooper-Jaguar. Love the dynamics of the car.
My vote for best pic of 2014 is the1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Monza at Hershey’s Grand Ascent Hill Climb (photo: Michael DiPleco)
#41 D Types at Goodwood
That AVALANCHE of D type’s at Goodwood Revival in 2014 it’s really something special!!!
The photograph titled 1953 Maserati A6GCS at the Zoute Grand Prix (photo by Julien Mahiels) is simply magnificent. To attempt to describe it in words would be like trying to define a beautiful woman. You simply know it when you see it.
The Maserati 250F pair battling into a corner at Goodwood. The prettiest and most representative GP car of the ’50s.
Impossible to choose.
1933 Alfa Romeo Monza 8C 2600 at the HMSA Sommet des Legendes at Circuit Mont-Tremblant
Every one of these photos is a winner, but my favorite was “1957 OSCA 372 FS at the Tour Auto Rally (photo: Julien Mahiels)”; perfect, romantic image of sports car driving.
Tough, tough, tough to figure this one out, so I chose the picture that I’d like to jump into and drive.
1921 Alfa Romeo G1 at the Mille Miglia (photo: Julien Mahiels)
I will go with the 935 K3 at Daytona. Nothing like a turbo flame show in the evening.
Osca
The MacLaren flies off the page. What a beauty!
1967 Porsche 907 LH at the Classic 24 Hour Daytona. Fantastic surreal photo!
Guys, you need to stop doing this to me. Took me 2 hours to narrow the coice down……to 17 pics. Beautiful photography, I always enjoy reading (looking at) your reports, and seeing the essence of this photopraphic art in your selection of the 50 best pictures is a true highlight. Ok, but a decision is needed, so I spent one more hour. David Ferguson’s shot of the Porsche 907 is just as sweet as Dennis Gray’s picture of Villeneuve’s 312 T5. The BMW M1 photo by Jurrie Vanhalle is as perfect as Michael DiPleco’s TR4 catch. Of the 17 photos, 10 are by Julien Mahiels, I love every picture this man shoots!! And so my prize goes to…..
—> 1991 Lancia Delta Integrale at the Eifel Rallye Festival (photo: Julien Mahiels) <—
The 1933 Alfa Monza 8C 2600 ,in the wet; really pulls my chain. an outstanding photo, wow.
1951 Jaguar XK 120 Sports Ecurie Ecosse piloted by Jay Leno and Ian Callum and 1953 Ferrari 375 MM Spider Pinin Farina at the Mille Miglia (photo: Julien Mahiels)
The 1921 Alpha team smiling at the Mille Miglia shows exhilaration and one of my plates is XLR8TING. It’s the feeling I want from a car and they are experiencing it.
The 1976 Lancia Stratos has it all. It is very sharp where it should be and the action is in the spray. The colors are perfect and you can just see this car crashing through the water. The instantance of it coming through the water makes you scream “WOW” Yes….I would like a print of this photo.
I like the picture of the 2 Maserati 250F’s the best.
1954 Cooper-Jaguar T33 at the Goodwood Members’ Meeting (photo: Julien Mahiels)
So many great shots. Very hard to choose. For me, the Maserati A6GCS at the Goodwood Festival of Speed is the best. It’s hard to beat a classic red Italian sports racer along with all the classic racing markers (i.e., hay bales, the checker and the start). Bob Critchell
The gaggle of D Types does it for me.Arguably the most beautiful automotive shape ever crafted.
1953 Maserati A6 GCS at the Zoute Grand Prix Rally (photo: Julien Mahiels)
1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Monza at Hershey’s Grand Ascent Hill Climb (photo: Michael DiPleco)
Close up really shows the ‘personality’ of vintage racing in bygone, golden years.
Driver isn’t really “pushing” with gritted teeth, but attentive, focused control of a beautiful work of art in the form of an automobile.
Great photography!
D Jag Goodwood race!
1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Monza at Hershey’s Grand Ascent
My favorite subject / picture is the Maserati A6 from Zoute GP. Because this environment, situation, car, clothing of the participants corresponding perfect with that time. it’s like a skilful stage design
The 1957 OSCA 372 FS at the Tour Auto Rally just jumps out to me. Very tough decision. Thanks for all of your efforts. I’m sure it was harder for you to pick just 50!
The 1968 Austin Mini Cooper S 1300 at the Tour Auto Rally – an iconic car
I vote fhe 1964 TR 4 from the PVGP
My vote goes to “1968 Austin Mini Cooper S 1300 at the Tour Auto Rally (photo: Julien Mahiels)”. You don’t need to have a lot of money to enjoy classic cars, like the photo I voted shows.
Fantastic Shots! When photographing at a race track there is an advantage as you get to try different settings as the cars keep coming around many times. For the Rally the photographer usually has to plan the shot ahead of time including lighting and gets one chance for each location that is picked for each car. My vote goes to Julien Mahiels photo of the 1957 Osca 372 FS at the Tour Auto Rally. Great use of light and motion.
Dennis Gray’s shot of the 1933 Alfa Monza 8C 2600 in the rain.
First: I want to thank the Sportscardigest readers who have left so many kind comments on my images.
Second: The image that impresses me most is the 1963 AC Cobra 289 at the Tour Auto (photo by: Julien Mahiels). Julien’s use of a low camera placement, and selective focus combined with shutter speed motion creates an image with real impact. If I owned this 289 Cobra this would be the print I would have hanging above the mantle.
Well done.
Dennis Gray
My vote goes to : 1968 Austin Mini Cooper S 1300 at the Tour Auto Rally (photo: Julien Mahiels)
It’s not the most exotic of cars, though I do love Mini Coopers. It’s the colour, the composition and the light that just sings of the romance of classic motorsport en plein air.
All wonderful, but Julian’s capture of the start of Moss Trophy is a freeze-frame from an old sports car racer’s wet dream. Loved it! Thanks!
Peter Greenfield’s ’33 Alfa Monza in the Canadian wet – of course. Kudos Dennis Gray!
The 33 Alfa in the rain.
Runners up. The 32 Alfa and the 64 TR4.
The start of the Moss Trophy Race is special, but falls out due to the ratio of wasted space to track space. When in doubt, crop again and again.
1984 Lancia 037 Eifel rally Festival 2014. Beauty and power in one black and white picture.http://s3.amazonaws.com/scardigest/wp-content/uploads/JMI_0116.jpg
1963 AC Cobra 289 at the Tour Auto Rally (photo: Julien Mahiels).
i thought Desert Island Discs was tough enough….!
To me the best 2014 picture is:
Start of Mos trophy of Julian really put me back in time and a beautiful composition.
Best regards

I vote for de Mini Cooper Rally, but with só beautifull pictures it’s quite a challenge to choose the best one, for myself I would say I vote for the one that emocionaly turns me on.
Some great images all, but my favorite is 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Monza at Hershey’s Grand Ascent Hill Climb (photo: Michael DiPleco).

1968 Austin Mini Cooper S 1300 at the Tour Auto Rally is the best. Great images all, but really, they just serve to reinforce just how much I want an KX120.

Nothing is hands-on this year, but this is my favorite: 1968 Austin Mini Cooper S 1300 at the Tour Auto Rally (photo: Julien Mahiels)
For me, ti’s the “1976 Lancia Stratos at the Eifel Rallye Festival” photo by Julien Mahiels. I can just about hear that car shouting for joy!
Beautiful.
Love the McLaren at Coronado, Can’t beat the sound of that car going down the straightaway.
My vote goes to the Austin Mini. With this photo we can feel the spirit of country racing.

Jeepers, there are some great photos here, and I especially like Julien Miehles’ work: really skilled in capturing movement with great colour and depth of field contrasts. My vote is for the Rallying Mini which leapt off the page when I very first saw it.
So many beautiful shots. I changed my mind about a dozen times before deciding that Tim Scott’s “Pair of Ford GT40s at Le Mans Classic” does it for me.

The following is the best for me: “Two different poses from the Maserati 250F drivers at the Goodwood Members’ Meeting (photo: Tim Scott)”

This is not an easy choice. At different times I’ve had a different favorite, but I always come back to Julien Mahiel’s capture of the 69 Porsche 917 at the LeMans classic. His use of light and darkness to highlight the car and compose the picture is very effective, and makes for a stunning image of a stunning car.

Sooo many choices. 1- 1967 Porsche 907 at Daytona; 2 – 1933 Alpha 8C 2600; 3 – 1937 Riley. All beautifully captured by the photographers.

All the pictures are wonderful, but this one captures the spirit of amateur competition.

my vote is for the great shot of the two Maserati 250Fs,a great action pic of an icon racer.
There were several great photos that fell away for me with the car model that was depicted. Oh well, lots of other great photos.
My overall favorite was the Osca on Tour Auto. The 907 at Daytona was very “arty”….liked that one almost as much. The interesting treatment of the start line scene at Goodwood Moss trophy deserves kudos. I’m not really a gravel / dirt rally enthusiasts, but most of those photos were also notable. (Again this year JM seems to shoot in ways that never fail to entertain me.)
