Bicester is a small market town 12 miles north of Oxford. For centuries nothing much remarkable happened, then an estate of small factory units was built to encourage light industry. First March, then Reynard, turned the town into the world capital of customer racing cars. More than 3,000 single-seaters were made there and they enjoyed periods of domination in every category short of Formula One.
March Engineering came about after overt sponsorship was allowed in European racing; Max Mosley set about raising the money, Robin Herd was the sole designer, Alan Rees, a friend of Robin’s from school days, would run the works teams and Graham Coaker would supervise production.
