The third edition of Historic Sportscar Racing’s (HSR) Classic 24 at Daytona presented by IMSA concluded Sunday November 12 at Daytona International Speedway, where six different Run Group champions were crowned after a full 24 hours of racing.
Each Run Group-winning entry was presented with a custom HSR Classic 24 Hour-specific B.R.M. Chronographes watch for their day-long achievements on the 3.56-mile DIS road course. Additionally, each of the top-finishing GT entries in Run Groups A through E also earned a B.R.M. Chronographes watch.
Gerard Lopez and Frantz Wallenborn, driving Iconic Racing’s 1969 Lola T70, took victory in Group A on cumulative scoring. It was the second-straight “HSR Classics” victory for the duo. Two other Group winners accomplished that same feat, as David Porter backed up his Classic 12 Hour win with a Classic 24 Hour victory at the wheel of his 2007 Pescarolo 01-Judd — shared with Rolex 24 winner and multiple IMSA Champion Joao Barbosa — and John Harrold, his son Ryan and KMW team owner Kevin Wheeler took his Team Mean 1979 Chevron B23/36 to the Group B victory.
Victory in Group C fell to Tommy Dreelan and Aaron Scott, who shared the ex-Leyton House Porsche 962 (above, photo courtesy of IMSA), while Group D produced another popular winner in Florent Moulin, who drove his 2001 Oreca-Dallara SP1-Chrysler solo to the Group D victory, topping all four of his Group’s on-track segments in a convincing display.
The final Group winner was the 1974 Porsche 911 — with 1988 Porsche 993 updates — that Mike Gaulke and Thomas Merrill co-drove to victory in the tight Group F battle.
Next up for HSR is the Classic 12 Hour at Sebring, Pistons and Props, presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network, November 29-December 3, 2017. The Group winners are listed below, and for further information please visit www.hsrrace.com
