In March, The Legends of Motorsports group —who kicked off their sophomore year at Barber Motorsports Park this May—sent out a press release that raised some eyebrows, at least in the U.S. In it they announced that this year they would be instituting a new Ford Contingency money program at all LoM events. I had to go back and reread the release twice to make sure that I wasn’t misunderstanding it. Contingency money? In historic racing? It’s certainly a bold new direction, but for some, I would think this tantamount to one of the seven signs of the historic racing apocalypse.
So how does this program work you may ask? According to LoM, there are four categories of cars eligible for the prize money: Historic Grand Prix; Thunder and Lightning/AP, BP, AS, BS, CP; Formula Ford; and Classic Monoposto/Formula B. Cars within these run groups must have “Ford Racing” decals displayed on each side of the car, forward of the rear wheel well to be eligible. Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st place ($300), 2nd place (200) and 3rd place ($100), in each of the abovementioned divisions for cars displaying the stickers.
