There is but a short list of automotive names, from the post-World War II period, that shine brightly. Names that when they come to mind, cause us to think about significant marques or types of vehicles that are renowned amongst enthusiasts today. Someone like Enzo Ferrari, who started his career as a racing car driver, would go on to manage the Scuderia Ferrari motor racing team and, of course, founded the Ferrari automobile marque. Then there was Colin Chapman who, like Ferrari, started racing privately before developing his own car that he named “Lotus.” Chapman too would go on to manage racing teams while at the same time develop the Lotus marque.
William Lyons was similar, but while he didn’t start out racing, he certainly was the name behind the post-WWII Jaguar marque. Other names like Eric Broadley, John Cooper and Bruce McLaren also come to mind.
