The organizers very wisely had the foresight to provide off-track entertainment, the most popular of which were 16 sessions of historic rally cars and historic karts running on the “loop” behind the paddock, and the viewing area was packed all weekend.
The rally section included an immensely potent and noisy Vauxhall Firenza in South African rules trim with a full-race Chevy Z28 engine, numerous tail-sliding Escorts, the magnificent ex-Hannu Mikkola/Stig Blomqvist Audi Quattro, a Lancia Delta S4 and even an exotic Group B Ferrari GTB 308.
The British Historic Kart Club, now the largest historic kart group in Europe, brought some 50 historic karts from the late 1950s to 1982. Some were karts driven by sons of the period owners, and a few were the same karts raced by the current owners all those years ago. Spectators and historic competitors were amazed at the speed of some of the 50-year-old 100-cc Class 1 machines.
