During the dozen years between 1919 and 1931, E. Paul duPont built only 537 automobiles, with only about 30 still in existence and more than half of those belonging to duPont descendants. The duPont marque will be among those featured at this year’s 65th annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday August 16, and seven family members will bring their cars to be displayed on the fabled 18th fairway at the event.
One of those cars, the only remaining 1931 Model H Sport Phaeton, will be presented by owner Richard “Dicky” Riegel III. Dicky fondly remembers when his father acquired the car in 1962, then drove it for years before undertaking its restoration and bringing the finished product to Pebble in 2005, where it was awarded both First in Class and Most Elegant Open Car honors.
“This was one of the defining moments in my father’s life — and my mother, my sister, my wife, my son and daughter, and I were all there to share that super moment with him,” says Dicky, whose ownership of the car is in partnership with his son. “I can say with a high level of certainty, the Phaeton will always be a member of our family.”
