The S.F. Edge Trophy at the Goodwood Members Meeting 2016 was held March 19-20 at the 2.4-mile Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England.

Highlighting an era well before before Goodwood’s original heyday of 1948 to 1966, the S.F. Edge Trophy featured ground-shaking Edwardian cars, GN specials and cars in the spirit of early Brooklands races prior to 1923. This new addition to the Members’ Meeting event attracted many of the glorious pioneers of motoring and motorsport from the early part of the 20th century.

Never previously seen at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in anger, many of the Edwardian monsters, including Darracq, GN Special, Hudson and Sunbeam, were indecently quick and spiritedly driven by their passionate and dedicated owners. The race reflected the spirit demonstrated by the hardy heroes who competed at Brooklands, the world’s first purpose-built paved oval in Weybridge in Surrey, from 1907. Featured entries included the 8.2-litre Curtiss aero-engined 1907 Mors Le Sanglier, one of several cars only sporting rear brakes [gulp], the 1905 Darracq 200hp Land Speed Record car and the 1923 Alfa Romeo Targa Florio that was a Goodwood course car 55 years ago.

The 2016 Goodwood S.F. Edge Trophy was far from a demonstration, with Duncan Pittaway’s 1921 GN Curtiss V-8 taking the victory ahead of the powerful 1923 Delage DH V-12 of Mathias Sielecki and Julian Majzub’s 1916 Sunbeam ‘Indianapolis’. The throwback group of spirited Edwardian Racers endeared themselves to Goodwood regulars with a superb show that provided evidence as to why motor racing became popular over a century ago.

Sports Car Digest documented the S.F. Edge Trophy at the 2016 Goodwood Members Meeting, with photographers Gunter Biener, Julien Mahiels and Tim Scott providing the following images from the race staged in the spirit of Brooklands prior to 1923. We split up the pictures into two galleries.
